We spent all week focusing on our competitive game battle agent. Competitive gaming AI is a demanding testing ground: you are playing against clever human strategists and algorithmic opponents under strict turn timers, hidden information, and sudden critical hits.

We were climbing the leaderboard steadily until we hit a baffling losing streak. After digging deep into our logs, we uncovered a silent memory truncation bug: our state history was silently clipping early turns, effectively giving our agent short-term amnesia during mid-game battles. 🦑

Once we untangled the dimension errors and restored the agent's full memory buffer, we rolled out our planned architecture: pairing tree-search heuristics with a gradient-boosted policy nudge engine. Instead of trying to hand-code every single matchup rule, we let our offline ranking pipeline study thousands of top-tier matches and learn when to take calculated risks. 🧠

The validation on the live ladder was immediate. Our competitive evaluation score jumped by 75 rating points (under the competition's ladder rating system), marking our highest standing of that July sprint. 📈

Fixing that silent bug gave our agent the clarity it needed to read the board accurately.
