Lab Update: Dialects and Milliseconds

If you have been following along from home here in Barbados or tuning in from abroad, you know our lab is always up to something lively. This week was a special one: we launched a cultural project close to our hearts, pushed our competitive machine learning benchmarks forward, and cleaned up how our internal development tools run.

The Rum Shop Index is officially live

This one is personal. Anyone who grew up in Bim knows that a rum shop is never just a place to buy a drink. It is the community living room. It is where you hear the freshest news, watch neighbours slam dominoes down on wooden tables with serious authority, and catch a breeze while the sun goes down.

We built and published the first version of the Rum Shop Index this week. It is a clean, lightweight digital directory built to catalogue these local landmarks properly. We gave it structured data so global search engines can index local spots accurately, added community menu details from spots like Scotland View, and made sure the static pages load smoothly even on mobile connections. The entire project went from initial design to finished launch in a single sprint.

Teaching farm simulation agents to look ahead

Over on the machine learning side, our team has been competing in an autonomous farming simulation. Picture an agricultural chess match: two automated agents managing crop yields, unpredictable weather, and market prices on a shared grid over a thirty-day season.

This week, we upgraded our agent with multi-turn heuristic rollouts. Instead of just reacting to whatever happened in the previous round, the agent projects how the board state will look up to five turns ahead. We also dialed in a reliable schedule for field maintenance so the agent avoids wasting turns on panic moves. It is all about patience and long-term yield.

Digitizing handwritten historical surveys

We are also making solid progress on our handwriting recognition project, which transcribes degraded historical agricultural survey logs. Old paper records suffer from ink bleed, faded cursive, and irregular handwriting styles that confuse standard optical scanners.

We added strict automated validation checks to our training pipeline this week, making sure the model verifies every batch of data before running expensive GPU jobs. We also added a token-probability confidence threshold that flags low-certainty passages for human review, reducing common transcription errors on degraded text crops (though confidence filters alone do not catch every plausible hallucination).

Streamlining the lab

Behind the scenes, we gave our internal coding setup a proper spring cleaning. As our software stack expanded, we wanted our multi-agent tools to run smoother without getting bogged down in platform differences.

We updated our workflow to focus on lean task execution, isolated test branches, and automated checks that prove code works before anything goes live.

From preserving local culture to pushing machine learning models, it was a full week of good honest work.
