In our lab, AI agents do not just sit around answering trivia. They work alongside us as digital research assistants, helping us audit data, formulate validation strategies, and compete in machine learning challenges. But to make an agent actually useful in a competitive sprint, you cannot just prompt it loosely and hope for the best. You need structured, repeatable protocols. 🧠

This week, we consolidated version 2.0 of our internal Data Science Playbook.

Instead of relying on sprawling system prompts, we broke our competitive workflow down into clean, modular protocols that guide our models through every phase of a competition:

• Exploratory Data Analysis: Protocols for auditing tabular distributions, image datasets, and dynamic game environments to catch covariate shift before training a single model.
• Feature Engineering: Standardized routines for extracting embeddings and building state representations while systematically mitigating silent target leaks.
• Validation and Modeling: Hard-earned guidelines that significantly reduce common pitfalls like leaking validation labels into preprocessing transforms or mismatching token lengths between training and inference.
• Experiment Tracking and ELO Ladders: Checklists for keeping reproducible experiment logs and tracking versioned model checkpoints.

Why formalize this internally? Because an unsupervised agent will make the exact same rushed mistakes a junior engineer might: leaking test labels into training splits or forgetting to normalize bounding boxes. While static protocols cannot guarantee the total absence of subtle leakages, encoding our engineering discipline directly into these modular skill files gives our agentic pairs a structured baseline for reproducible work. 🎓
